I'd reply with the generic replies, like "Hey.. there.. long time no see.. how's thing?" I'm sure a few text replies won't hurt. If it's close friends, I don't care too much for spelling or if they think I'm rude. If it's something a bit more format, I'd make sure the important info is in it and accurate and to the point.
